Phobias

What is a phobia ?

A phobia is “an external symbolic interpretation of an internal Anxiety” It is a “ Very Powerful type of Fear ”, an external symbol of a subconscious anxiety. The anxiety is “projected” onto an object or situation, which creates feelings of panic and/or feelings of being out of control.

When a person finds themselves in a situation that creates intense emotions the person’s “psyche” has the ability to repress/hide/disavow those emotions . Once these emotions have been bottled up the psyche will create a phobia to warn the person not to get into that ( or any similar ) situation again .

Common Phobias

Claustrophobia (enclosed spaces)
Acrophobia (Heights)
Odontophobia (dentist)
Aviatopophobia (Flying)
Glossophobia (Speaking in public)
Aicmophobia (Needles)
Thanatophobia (Death or dying)
Agoraphobia (open spaces )

Scopophobia ( Social phobia, fear of being humiliated )

Scopophobia is the most common condition I deal with as a hypnotherapist. There is a fear of embarrassing, or humiliating “on the spot” types of situations. For example; dinner parties, public speaking, being judged by others or even humiliated, fear of rejection, feeling of inferiority. On a general level, the social phobic worries continuously about how others “see” them, and what others may think about them. It’s not surprising then, that the sufferer usually spends a lot of their time trying to conceal the anxiety from others.

For some, however, the fear feeds itself. They blush, tremble, sweat profusely, stammer and stutter, perhaps even lose the ability to speak. One in four say they’ve experienced intense fear and trembling in social situations. Many more say they’ve felt nervousness, blushing, a racing heart or dry mouth or throat, all of which can be symptoms of social phobia.
