Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Some people think of Hypnosis procedures as involving such things as swinging
pendulums. Others think of “look into my eyes”. Indeed it
is possible to induce hypnosis using such devices, however there are no
flowing robes or swinging watches, just a reassuring manner to put you
at your ease and the expertise to help you with your problems.
On it’s own hypnosis is very useful: it is relaxing and therefore
helps people with problems such as stress. However, the real power is
felt when hypnosis is used together with other therapeutic techniques,
and it is these combinations that make hypnotherapy such a powerful process
for helping people to overcome their problems.
The first thing that happens is that you are made comfortable in a reclining
chair. I will then use my voice to guide you into a very relaxed comfortable
state ( hypnosis ). A good definition is a “a state of relaxation
and concentration combined with a state of heightened awareness induced
by suggestion.
When in hypnosis you will be fully aware of what is happening. The hypnotic
state that I induce will bring about a very pleasant feeling of relaxation,
a sort of clearing away the debris of everyday trivia, allowing a laser
like focusing within the mind. With this new found access, habit forming
thoughts and behaviours can be removed, leading the way to an existence,
where the subconscious mind can control as it should and learn new reactions
to those already entrenched sets of rules.
Will I be asleep?
No. A person in hypnosis (often referred to conscious hypnosis) is not
asleep. The state of hypnosis is a totally natural phenomenon, it is very
pleasant and relaxing and a person can converse quite easily whilst within
the state, and with hypnoanalysis you will be encouraged to do so.
When in hypnosis your mind is alert and you are fully aware of what is
happening. You are conscious of everything that is being said and done.
You are no more asleep during hypnosis than you would be when daydreaming
or reading a book. A popular misconception is that you somehow “go
under”. When hypnotised you remain fully aware and hear every word
that is being said.
Are there any causes for concern ?
There is absolutely no question of being controlled or manipulated , nobody
could be made to do something that they did not want to do. People who
say or think “nobody could get me under” or “I wouldn’t
want anyone controlling my mind” or “I might blurt my secrets
out” are really demonstrating that they have a total misconception
of what hypnosis is.
If I tell you my problems will It go any further?
I am bound by a code of practice and ethics
of the highest order and I undertake to respect a clients confidentiality
at all times.
